Summary

One for sorrow, two for joy
Edinburgh is gripped by the greatest terror it has ever known。 A lone bomber is targeting victims across the city and no one is safe。

Three for a girl, four for a boy
DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach face death every day – and not just the deaths of the people being taken hostage by the killer。

Five for silver, six for gold
When it becomes clear that with every tip-off they are walking into a trap designed to kill them too, Ava and Luc know that finding the truth could mean paying the ultimate price。

Seven for a secret never to be told…
But with the threat – and body count – rising daily, and no clue as to who’s behind it, neither Ava nor Luc know whether they will live long enough to tell the tale…

I could not put this down。 I have read all the Callanach and Turner books and they never fail to keep me on the edge of my seat。 I am out of breath at the end of this one。 It's not just the storyline but the characters you like and want to follow that make it。 I could not put this down。 I have read all the Callanach and Turner books and they never fail to keep me on the edge of my seat。 I am out of breath at the end of this one。 It's not just the storyline but the characters you like and want to follow that make it。 。。。more

I'm planning on reading thrillers once in a while again, as to be able to better advise in this genre the clients we get in the bookstore I work in。 This was a very good one to start with! This blatant emotional manipulation with characters I've grown to admire and love is something I just can't accept。 To top it off, leaving that cliffhanger was just cruel。 Calls to mind another series that I read and loved until a moment just like the one in this book。 Our relationship is over, joining a list of authors I will hard pass in the future。I can't believe other long-time readers of this series will be happy with this 7th installment, but I have always been one to be heavily invested in a good writer with great plots and good stories to tell。 All good things must end。。。Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for this e-book ARC to read and review。 I can't recommend。 。。。more

Perfect sorrow A very good read。half way through this book I did think this could be the end of Luc and Ava 。 Helen dropped the word perfect out of the title。 And anyone who has followed the perfect books closely will fill Ava is breaking down。 But I will be following Helen very closely with hope of reading about Luc。 And Ava again。

This is where I am after reading One For Sorrow by Helen Fields。 Never has a book ever given me more emotions than this, and I read a lot。 Let me explain。I’m late on the review of this book because life and accepting too many review requests got in my way。 But I KNEW this book was going to be amazing because I’m a huge fan of Helen Fields。 I am an even bigger fan of the D。I。 Callanach series she writes。 I have the box set of the original 5。 I have the 6th and now the 7th will be added to the collection。 I love them。 Bu now that I have read it, I almost wish I could go back in time and pause。 Because it was bad? No。 It was incredible。 Hands down the best Mystery/Thriller I have read in a long time and I am a thriller nerd! But this series has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster that has now slammed me into a brick wall and ripped my heart out of my chest at the same time。 I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so all I will say is prepare yourself。 It’s not always a happy ending for all。 So much chaos。 So much heartbreak。 So much hope。 I’m going to compare Helen Fields to TV producing Goddess, Shonda Rhimes。 Just when you think all is calm and happy and wrapped up nice, she pulls the rug out from underneath you。One For Sorrow is probably the best in the D。I。 Callanach series and they were all phenomenal。 This one was jam packed with action from the very first second and so many heart wrenching moments that any lover of this series is going to find difficult。 As usual, Luc and Ava are perfection together and separate。 Natasha is probably one of my favorite side characters as she pops up at just the right time and has a little comedic flair to her。 I have grown to love all the supporting characters like Lively and Graham。 I wish this was my friend group in real life。 The story never rested。 You will probably finding yourself flipping pages faster than you can even read and having to flip back。 Not a single dull moment。 Not a single aspect I didn’t like。 Fields hit mystery/thriller gold with this series and One For Sorrow。Get a copy。 If you haven’t read the series, go and do it。 I promise you will not be disappointed。 These characters will be ones you love for a long time; books I will recommend over and over again for years and years to come。 Helen Fields delivered an epic gut punch with this book in the absolute best way, and I can only hope she will give us more in this series eventually。 Please? 。。。more

One for Sorry by Helen Fields says book 7 of 7, but there better be more after this!! This is quite a twisty and diabolical book。 The Liam character was so cringeworthy, and I kept anticipating what would happen next to Quinn。 I liked the main character, Ava, and her partner, Luc。 Good overall story and plotline。 This book left me a bit shaken。 I had to take breaks toward the end of the book because it was so intense。 The ending just made me sad。 The book gives you a glimpse into what someone ex One for Sorry by Helen Fields says book 7 of 7, but there better be more after this!! I recently read The Shadow Man by Helen Fields and enjoyed it very much, so decided to go ahead and read One For Sorrow even though I knew it was the seventh book to feature DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner。 I normally prefer to start at the beginning of a series, but had no trouble reading this as a standalone, and also have six more books to look forward to。One For Sorrow opens with the shocking death of Ava’s friend, the pathologist Ailsa Lambert。 What follows is a series of bombings aimed I recently read The Shadow Man by Helen Fields and enjoyed it very much, so decided to go ahead and read One For Sorrow even though I knew it was the seventh book to feature DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner。 I normally prefer to start at the beginning of a series, but had no trouble reading this as a standalone, and also have six more books to look forward to。One For Sorrow opens with the shocking death of Ava’s friend, the pathologist Ailsa Lambert。 What follows is a series of bombings aimed at hurting as many of the emergency services as possible。 They are tipped off and led into a trap by a very twisted killer who knows they have no choice but to respond。 Parts of this story are very difficult to read, but also hard to put down。 The story is told solely from DCI Turner’s point of view, and it takes a long time to work out the reason behind the horrific attacks, which keeps the reader turning the pages。The story is told mainly in the present with occasional chapters headed ‘before’ that relate to a young woman called Quinn becoming involved with a man who resorts to coercive control, stalking and date rape before she sees him for what he is and breaks up with him。 The two narrative strands continue with no obvious link between them。 Both stories are equally compelling as you try to work out how they are connected。 The police are also struggling to find any leads as to who is responsible, making it difficult to predict who the next target will be。 One For Sorrow is a cross between a police procedural and a psychological thriller。 There are lots of twists and turns before the bomber’s identity is finally revealed。 The characters are well drawn and convincing, often resorting to the usual black humour and banter to offset the grim reality they face every day。 It is a tense and gripping read, with a strong sense of place and a shocking ending。 I hope Helen Fields does not make us wait too long for the next book in this series。 Thanks to Avon and NetGalley for a digital copy to review。 。。。more

The blurb is super small because any more details would mean spoiling the fun。 This is my first book by the author (and the first in the series)。 Since I don’t know the characters from start, my review will focus on the plot instead of interpersonal relationships。 •tDespite being 400 pages (the last 5% is for promotional material), the book reads very fast。 There’s enough action to keep us glued to the pages。 •tA few personal scenes are interspersed to continue the personal subplot and to give some breathing space to the readers。 •tThere’s a second timeline where the chapters are mentioned ‘before’。 It starts as an independent track, but by 45%, we know how the tracks will merge。 •tThe second half of the book is where readers know more than the main characters and want to see how things unfold。 (Needless to say, I started guessing around the same time and got it right)。 •tThe forensic and criminal profiling scenes are my favorite。 I love them when done well (I have a special love for forensics)。 •tThere are plenty of characters but no confusion。 That’s probably because I assumed that the ones from the force are recurring characters。 •tOne thing I found odd is the language and dialogues。 Except for the places, the book doesn’t say Scottish thriller。 It seemed more like something from the UK。 Maybe Edinburg is that way (I wouldn’t know)。 •tThe main plot ends with no loose ends (though one point is left for us to assume)。 The pace slows downs towards the end as the revelation is followed by introspection and some progress in the subplot。 •tThere is a cliffhanger, yes。 Quite a brutal one (for those invested in the series), but I’m okay with it。 My involvement is limited to the case。 I’ll read the previous and next ones in the series, though。 To sum up, One for Sorrow is a good police procedural dealing with important social themes and manages to keep me hooked almost throughout。 Thank you, NetGalley, Harper 360, and Avon, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions expressed are my own。#OneforSorrow #NetGalley*****(view spoiler)[TW: Stalking, obsession, drugged rape, child death。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

One for Sorrow by Helen Fields is a highly recommended police procedural and the seventh book in the D。I。 Callanach series。DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach take on a case that requires all hands on deck as a bomber seems to be targeting/taking specific people hostage and then using them in the crimes。 The bombs are also resulting in the deaths of investigators and emergency medical personal。 While investigating the current bombings they need to try and uncover why this is happening and find One for Sorrow by Helen Fields is a highly recommended police procedural and the seventh book in the D。I。 Callanach series。DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach take on a case that requires all hands on deck as a bomber seems to be targeting/taking specific people hostage and then using them in the crimes。 The bombs are also resulting in the deaths of investigators and emergency medical personal。 While investigating the current bombings they need to try and uncover why this is happening and find some clues or evidence that link all the victims to the individual responsible。In alternate chapters titled "Before" that are set back in time before the current situation, the relationship between a young woman and her boyfriend is examined。 At first these offer a bit of relief from the tension created by the current investigation, but soon they also take a chilling turn。Turner is taking this case very personally and is out for justice no matter the personal cost。 Each new situation created by the bomber places all the team members present in a dangerous, precarious situation。 Clearly these bombings are personal to the perpetrator too。While the tension is high in the investigation in the present, clues can also be found in the chapters set in the before chapters。 The alternating story lines work well in this novel as each have their own separate plot and clues while they become more anxious and suspenseful。 Both lead to an explosive ending。 The writing is excellent and the pacing is taut and brisk。As my first book in the series, One for Sorrow can be read as a stand alone procedural。 I think it would help with backstory to have read others in the series, but I didn't experience any real problems following the plot due to a lack of information about the characters。 I was not as invested as long time readers in Turner and Callanach's relationship, however, and don't have all the information on the team members。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Avon/HarperCollins。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2022/0。。。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Another excellent action packed adventure filled with murder and mayhem。 No。 7 in the series and I have read and loved every one of them。 There is a problem with this one, though, and that is the very disturbing ending。 I hope it is not a portent of the future! The last couple of books seem to have focused more on D。C。I。 Ava Turner than Luc, but this is supposed to be the D。I。 Luc Callanach series! Eagerly awaiting No。 8 — Ms。 Fields, please don’t break our hearts!

The immediate and sustained action in this police procedural was a refreshing change。 The usual formula of a big city DI going to a rural police force to solve a case and the devotion of multiple chapters to narrate the DI teaching the locals is thankfully avoided。 Just the final reveal was a little disappointing for me, otherwise an interesting read。

HATED IT。 I am furious with the author for dragging me through another book where wishy-washy, Ava cannot woman up to love Luc, and where she makes awful decisions as a DCI。 While the bomb plot was interesting, the ending is absolutely disgusting。 An awful cliff hanger where now Luc will be unable to love Ava, and we start the whole maddening "will they ever get together" nonsense all over again。 I'm just furious, and actually hope this is the end of the series, with us never knowing what will h HATED IT。 I am furious with the author for dragging me through another book where wishy-washy, Ava cannot woman up to love Luc, and where she makes awful decisions as a DCI。 While the bomb plot was interesting, the ending is absolutely disgusting。 An awful cliff hanger where now Luc will be unable to love Ava, and we start the whole maddening "will they ever get together" nonsense all over again。 I'm just furious, and actually hope this is the end of the series, with us never knowing what will happen with these two。I loved these books in the beginning。 I've had a crush on Luc since book one, and loved that he found a strong women to heal him。 Sadly, as he healed, Ava just became a pathetic git that wasn't even likeable。 I never, ever understand why his taking her prayer slate when he thought she was gone forever was such a big, freaking deal that Ava forced him to go back to France。 Utterly contrived and stupid, yet I kept reading, hoping for closure。 Fat chance, that。 。。。more

DI Callanach #7 - and it doesn’t disappoint! No spoilers here but whereas the first 6 in the series featured progressively more gruesome killings this has a slightly different focus。 Yes there are killings a plenty, and plenty of unexpected shocks, but I found the detail of the psychological aspects of the case equally interesting。 A great page-turner from first to the very last!
